Breastfeeding versus bottle feeding did not result in differing 18-month survival rates in HIV-free infants of HIV-infected mothers in a large South African cohort study. But among children alive at 6 months of age, the probability of HIV-free survival did differ between those breastfed for fewer than 6 months versus more than 6 months.
